Aston Martin plans to electrify its lineup by 2030, with hybrids coming in 2024 and electric cars in 2025.
Aston Martin will electrify its full lineup of plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains by 2030, the company announced Friday.
Aston previously confirmed that the first plug-in hybrid (a reboot of the Valhalla supercar) will arrive in 2024 and the first electric sports car in 2025 By 2026, all new Aston product lines will have electric powertrain options will be added.
The electrification goal is part of a broader sustainability initiative. Dubbed "Racing Green," the initiative includes goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from manufacturing facilities by 2030 and zero carbon emissions from the supply chain by 2039.
Environmentally friendly materials are also part of the plan, including "green aluminum alloys" manufactured with 100% renewable energy and vegan interior options.
In March, Aston announced a partnership with Britishvolt to develop new battery technology for use in 2025 EVs. For future plug-in hybrid vehicles, the company will rely on a technology-sharing plan with Mercedes-Benz, in which it owns a 20% stake.
Aston first confirmed plans for an electric sports car and SUV in March 2021, and in an interview later that year CEO Tobias Moers (former boss of Mercedes' performance brand AMG) said the sports car would replace one of Aston's current models
However, in another interview that year, Moers also noted that Aston needed to carry out its plans. At the time he joined the company, he said, Aston had promised many things but had not delivered. This was certainly true of Aston's EV launch plans, which experienced several failures.
Aston's previous EV, an electric version of the Rapide called the Rapide E, never went into production. First, a partnership with LeEco, then touted as the "Netflix of China" and a supporter of Faraday Future, fell through. Then, Williams Advanced Engineering stepped in to continue development, but the Rapide E disappeared due to cost cutting. Will Aston succeed this time? We will have to wait and see.
