The lighter and faster Gen3 Formula E car is unveiled ahead of its Season 9 debut.

Organizers of the Formula E World Championship unveiled late Thursday the design of the third-generation race car for the electric car racing series that will be introduced in Season 9 (through the 2022/2023 season).

The unveiling took place in Monaco ahead of this weekend's Formula E round in Monaco, where organizers say the car is the first racing car "designed and optimized specifically for street racing." As in previous seasons, the Gen3 car will be a common design for all teams, but specific parameters can be developed by each team.

The inspiration for the design came from modern fighter planes, but more important with regard to the design was to improve performance over the current Gen2 machines. This was accomplished primarily by increasing power and reducing weight. The Gen3 machines also introduced new fast charging of the batteries, which could increase the race distance.

As for the chassis of the Gen3 machine, the overall length and width were slightly reduced to 5,000 mm and 1,700 mm, respectively, and the target weight of the complete car including driver was reduced from the current 1,984 lbs. to about 1,720 lbs. The chassis still features an open cockpit with a halo protection system, but the electric motor generator is mounted front and rear, not just rear as in the current car.

The front motor-generator has 335 hp and the rear has 470 hp. According to organizers, the motors convert about 95% of the battery's electrical energy into motion. For internal combustion engines, about 40% of the stored energy is used as fuel.

Adding a second motor-generator means regenerating more braking energy. According to organizers, at least 40% of the energy used in a race comes from regenerative braking. With enhanced stopping power, Gen3 machines no longer require conventional hydraulic brakes at the rear.

The top speed of the Gen3 machines is claimed to be over 200 mph.

For the batteries, organizers have set the weight at 626 pounds, down from the current 848 pounds. The fast-charging limit is 600 kilowatts, which will be allowed for 30 seconds in the race. This is expected to allow for 4 kilowatt hours of charging.

Uniquely, Formula E is also addressing the life cycle of Gen3 cars and their components. For example, damaged carbon fiber components can be recycled into new fiber for other uses. Tires are also recyclable, with about 26% of the material being sustainable.

Season 9 of Formula E is scheduled to begin in Saudi Arabia in early 2023. Ten teams have signed on for the new season, including automakers DS, Jaguar, Mahindra, and newcomers Maserati, Nio, Nissan, and Porsche.
