Jay Leno hospitalized with burns from erupting car

Jay Leno was hospitalized Sunday with burns to his face after a car fire.

"I was seriously burned in a gasoline fire," Leno said in a statement to Variety. 'I'm going to be okay. I just need a week or two to get back on my feet."

TMZ first reported that the comedian and host of "Jay Leno's Garage" was in his Los Angeles area garage on Sunday when the car "erupted into flames without warning." The flames burned the left side of Leno's face but not his eyes or ears, citing anonymous sources with direct knowledge of the incident.

He was taken to the burn unit at the Grossman Burn Center, where he remained as of Monday and has canceled all appointments for the next two weeks, according to TMZ.

TMZ spoke with Leno, who said he was repairing a clogged fuel line on his 1907 White Steam Car when a fuel leak sprayed gasoline on his face and hands. At the same time, a spark caused an explosion that set Leno ablaze. Leno said his friend Dave acted quickly and put out the flames. Leno did not give Dave's last name.

TMZ reported that Leno had third-degree burns, that he may need skin grafts, and that he was expected to be hospitalized for 5 to 10 days.

News of the health issue was first reported by People magazine. Leno was scheduled to attend a financial conference in Las Vegas on Sunday, but had to cancel due to a "serious emergency." However, Leno's facial burns and their cause were not disclosed at that time.

"His family was unable to provide us with very many details, but there was a very serious medical emergency that prevented Jay from traveling," an email to attendees published by People read.

Leno is known for taking a hands-on approach to his vast collection of cars and motorcycles, putting his mechanical knowledge to work to keep them running with his paid staff.

Editor's note: This article has been updated with information regarding the vehicle Leno was working on, the cause of the fire, the injuries sustained, and how long Leno is expected to be hospitalized.
