Mercedes-Benz AMG Unveils GT2 Racing Car

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will soon be getting a makeover, but the current model sports car with a V-8 engine still has some life left in it.

AMG revealed on Thursday a new GT2 racing version of the GT that will be offered to customer teams in time for the 2023 motorsports season.

The car will join the existing GT3 and GT4 racing cars based on AMG's GT platform, primarily targeted at teams competing in the SRO-sanctioned GT2 European series, highlighted by the Spa 24-hour race. Like all race cars, the GT2 will receive full technical support from Mercedes' motorsport partner HWA.

Competition will not be easy for the GT2. Audi R8 LMS GT2, Brabham BT63 GT2, KTM X-Bow GT2, Maserati MC20 GT2, and Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Power comes from AMG's familiar twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8; the engine in the GT2 is the closest to that found in AMG's GT Black Series, which, like the road car, uses a flat-plane crankshaft.

The GT2's maximum output is limited to 697 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

A six-speed sequential-shift transmission is mounted in the rear as the transaxle, with a mechanically adjustable self-locking differential. Dampers and anti-roll bars are also adjustable and designed for motorsports, AMG said.

AMG is withholding additional specs because the GT2 is still in testing. The Affalterbach-based company also did not mention pricing.
