Ford's F-150 is getting its first update since its 2021 model year.

Prototypes of the updated model have been spotted ahead of its debut later this year. The new truck should be introduced in the 2024 model year.

Camouflage gear on the prototype spotted during testing points to a new design for the lights on both ends. The improved grille is also clearly visible on one of the testers.

Heavy camouflage in the rear also suggests that Ford will finally offer a multi-function tailgate on the F-150 with this update. Patent drawings submitted by Ford a year ago showed a three-part tailgate with a hinged door as the center section.

The interior will also be slightly modified. Spy shots confirm that the center stack will feature a new vertical-style infotainment screen, as opposed to the horizontal-oriented screens offered in 8.0- and 12.0-inch sizes on the current F-150.

The new screen could be the same 15.5-inch portrait-style screen found on the current F-150 Lightning, but there also appears to be a row of buttons located along the top of the screen that are not present on the Lightning's screen, so it is possible that the new screen could be the same as that found on other Ford It could also be the smaller 12.0-inch screen found on other Fords, as there also appears to be a row of buttons along the top of the screen, which is not present on the Lightning's screen.

It is not clear what, if any, updates Ford has planned for the F-150's diverse powertrain. The Raptor R's 700-horsepower 5.2-liter V-8 supercharger was just added in 2023, while the Lightning, a fully electric vehicle that delivers up to 580 horsepower, was added in 2022.

Other options include twin-turbocharged 2.7- and 3.5-liter V-6s, a 3.3-liter V-6, and a 5.0-liter V-8. A hybrid option is also available that combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and an electric motor with the F-150's standard 10-speed automatic transmission. The F-150's previously available turbo diesel is not expected to return in this update.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the availability of the turbo diesel enigne.
