2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R on the dyno, 580 hp at the wheels

The 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R brings V-8 power back to Ford's performance off-road pickup truck, and YouTube channel Late Model Restoration recently strapped one to the dyno to see how well it manages the extra power.

The truck's supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine, a variant of the Predator engine found in the recently discontinued Mustang Shelby GT500, is rated at 700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. However, this was measured at the crank, not the wheel. A dyno is needed to see how much power is actually transferred to the ground.

Using 93 octane fuel and 120 miles of showroom fresh track, Late Model Restoration recorded 580 hp/6,300 rpm at the rear wheels and 533 lb-ft/4,400 rpm of torque. Note that the 10-speed automatic transmission has a 1:1 ratio in seventh gear for the most accurate results, but the test was conducted in fifth gear to avoid hitting the Raptor R's speed limiter of 114 mph.

These figures represent a driveline loss of 18% in horsepower and 17% in torque, not unusual for a pickup truck. Hennessey Performance Engineering recorded a 17% driveline loss at the rear wheels when dyno testing the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. Ram's supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine produces 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.

After obtaining baseline numbers, Late Model Restoration replaced the air filter with a high-flow Ford Performance one. Packing ice around the supercharger improved the output to 590 hp and 541 lb-ft.

Ford does not state a 0-60 mph time, but the Raptor R can tow up to 8,700 lb, which is 500 lb more than the standard Raptor with the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. The Raptor R also comes standard with 37-inch tires, which are optional on the base model Raptor. The Raptor R's base price (including destination) is $109,145, which is $25,245 more than the V-6 Raptor.
