Mercedes-Benz Maybach launches its first plug-in hybrid.

Mercedes-Benz's Maybach division unveiled the company's first plug-in hybrid, the S 580 e, on Thursday

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class-based electric sedan will go on sale in China later this year, followed by Europe and several other markets, though, No mention of sales in the U.S.

The powertrain consists of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder and one electric motor, with power supplied to the rear wheels. With a total output of 502 hp, the car accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 mph.

When switched to pure EV mode, output drops to 147 hp. Maybach does not mention the size of the battery, but claims that it can achieve a range of 62 miles on a full charge in the WLTP cycle used overseas. Under the more stringent EPA cycle, the range will be shorter. According to Maybach, a DC fast charger can charge the battery in about 30 minutes.

Few designate this special version of the Maybach S-Class as an electrified model, but additional covers for charging ports, blue accents on the headlights, and hybrid-specific information on the instrument cluster and infotainment system hint

The hybrid version is also available in a number of versions.

Maybach is preparing an update to its version of the U.S.-built Mercedes GLS-Class, which may also get a plug-in hybrid option.

The ultra-luxury car division also plans to jump into the EV game. The first electric vehicle will be based on the U.S.-built Mercedes EQS SUV,

and the first electric car will be the Mercedes GLS-Class, which will be built in the United States.
