Audi's new naming strategy separating EV and internal combustion engine vehicles.

Audi plans to introduce more than 20 new or updated models by the end of 2025, starting with the new Q6 E-tron electric compact crossover due in late 2023.

More than half of the new models will be electric by then, and Audi plans to revise its naming strategy to make it clear to customers which models will have electric powertrains and which will still have internal combustion engines.

Audi CEO Markus Duessmann said during a presentation on Thursday to explain Audi's 2022 financial results that under the revised naming strategy, Audi EVs will have even numbers in their names, while pure ICE models and plug-in hybrids stated that they would be given odd numbers.

He said the transition began with the renaming of the E-Tron to the Q8 E-Tron following the mid-cycle update of the electric SUV last year. This means that the current gas-powered SUV, the Q8, could be renamed the Q9 after a mid-cycle update later this year.

Similarly, Audi's upcoming redesign of the A4 is rumored to be renamed the A5, with the electric A4 E-Tron to be introduced shortly thereafter.

Eventually, Audi's EVs will also use odd numbers in their names. Audi has already confirmed that the final vehicle with an internal combustion engine will be launched in 2026.

During the same presentation, Duesmann also confirmed plans for an EV that would sit below the current Q4 E-Tron. It is not clear if the model he was referring to is the A4 E-Tron or something smaller like the A2 E-Tron.
