Lucid Teases Tesla Model Y Rival

Lucid's third vehicle will be a compact crossover comparable to the Tesla Model Y.

A teaser photo posted to X on Wednesday by automotive journalist and former colleague of ours, John Voelker, shows a sleek The silhouette of the vehicle is shown in the photo. [The photo was taken at a recent ceremony for the expansion of Lucid's plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, where Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said an engineering prototype of the mystery vehicle, code-named Project Midsize, is already in production.

In an interview with Electrek at the same event, Rawlinson said that Project Midsize will appear "in a few years" and that production will take place at the company's new plant near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

He also said that the car will be based on the company's "big-volume platform" and will likely lose some of the luxury design found in the Gravity and debut Air sedan. in an interview with Electrek, Rawlinson said that Lucid's current product Mercedes-Benz vehicle rivals, but stressed that the Project Midsize will be very similar to the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Pricing for the Gravity has not been announced, but Lucid said at last fall's vehicle reveal that prices would start below $80,000.

Given Rawlinson's comments about Project Midsize's positioning, the vehicle may start at under $50,000.

If Lucid looks like it intends to grow beyond its current niche position, it will need a big boost in volume. Lucid manufactured 8,428 cars in 2023 and delivered only 6,001 cars to customers.
