2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 43 with turbo 4 and RWD

A redesigned version of Mercedes-Benz AMG's GT sports car will hit dealerships this spring, but the lineup is far from complete.

On Tuesday, Mercedes unveiled the entry-level AMG GT 43, which will share 416 hp with the AMG SL 43 convertible (and AMG C 43 sedan) coming in 2023, thanks to a 2.0-liter turbo four. The GT 43 will appear in the 2025 model year but no specific sales launch date in the U.S. has been announced.

The GT, which allows for 2+2 seating, is also available in GT 55 and GT 63 grades, both powered by AMG's familiar twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. This engine produces 469 hp in the GT 55 and 577 hp in the GT 63, and a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive complete the drivetrain package for both grades.

Also expected is a top-of-the-line plug-in hybrid model that will likely be named the GT 63 S E Performance. This is planned for later this year and will produce over 800 hp.

Despite the loss of the four-cylinder, the GT 43 is no slouch, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 174 mph. Underpinning this performance is an electric turbocharger similar to those used in Formula 1.

The electric motor, which is only 1.6 inches wide and powered by a 48-volt mild hybrid system, is located between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the intake side and is directly integrated with the turbocharger. By spinning the compressor at low rpm, before the exhaust gases transfer to the compressor, turbo lag is reduced, resulting in a more responsive engine.

The GT 43 also skips the all-wheel drive system of other GT variants, with only the rear wheels being driven. The smaller engine and elimination of the all-wheel drive system should result in a considerable weight reduction compared to other GT variants, but the vehicle weight has not been disclosed.

The GT 43 also does not come standard with the AMG Ride Control suspension with adjustable damping; the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive mode selector's race mode is not present here either.

The GT 43 is visually distinguished from the GT 55 and GT 63 by its unique front and rear masks and round tailpipes instead of the square tips of the V-8 grade. The GT 43 is also available with different wheel patterns, with the standard set being 19 inches in diameter.

No pricing information has been announced, but a significant discount from the GT 55's starting price of $136,050 is expected. As a guide, the SL 43 starts at $111,050 and the SL 55 at $142,450. All figures include a $1,150 destination charge.
