The name Rivian R1X was registered as a trademark.
Rivian has just announced the R2 electric SUV and the R3 and R3X hot hatches, and may have new plans for its existing R1 platform, which is used in the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV.
Rivian has filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the name R1X. The application was published by the USPTO in October 2023, but Rivian's application dates back to 2021.
The name suggests a performance version of Rivian R1T or R1S. Since Rivian uses the X designation to indicate the R3X as a sportier competitor to the R3, it is likely to do so here as well.
A potential X version of the R1 model could help support customer interest as these vehicles age, while giving Rivian a more direct competitor to high-end off-roaders like the Ford F-150 Raptor and GMC Hummer EV. Bulked-up styled pickup trucks like the Raptor have even appeared in patent applications for cargo bed storage systems. Such a system would make sense as an addition to keep the R1T fresh later in its life cycle.
To differentiate itself, the hypothetical Rivian R1X would likely need to exceed the output of Rivian's current quad-motor powertrain (835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque). While Livian may stick with its quad motor powertrain, it may drop the Bosch motors used in its current quad motor setup in favor of its in-house developed Enduro drive unit, which is currently used only in dual motor models.
Rivian should begin production of the newly revealed R2 and R3/R3X; the R2 will be built starting in 2026 at the same Normal, Illinois plant that produces the R1T and R1S.
It is unclear where R3 will be produced or when production will begin.
