Rivian to offer free mat wrap for some vehicles in April
Through April 30, Rivian is offering a free matte finish paint protection film for certain configurations of the R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV.
According to Rivian's website, the XPEL Stealth film is UV-resistant and self-repairing of minor scratches and swirl marks. Paint protection films can maintain a glossy finish on most painted surfaces, but Rivian opted for a satin-like matte finish here.
Installation does not require removal of the body panels, so the film is wrapped around the surface to the edges whenever possible, otherwise within 1 mm from the edge. Rivian posted on X (formerly Twitter) that this option would be available for both the R1T and R1S in April, but the automaker's online configurator only shows it for the R1T at the time of publication.
Paint protection film is typically carried by the aftermarket, but Rivian is not the first automaker to offer it. In February, Ford introduced a matte finish film for the Mustang, albeit as a $5,995 option on certain coupe models.
Rivian also previously announced that it will begin shipping North American Charging Standards (NACS) adapters to customers this month, which will allow its EVs to be charged at more than 15,000 Tesla Supercharger stations in North America. This will add to the approximately 16,000 public charging stations already available to customers, the company said at the time.
Last month, Rivian also unveiled the R2 electric SUV and the R3 and R3X hot hatches; the R2 will be produced at the same Normal, Illinois plant as the R1T and R1S, starting in 2026. However, the production schedule and location of the R3 and R3X have not yet been discussed.
