New VW California camper lands with plug-in hybrid

A new generation of California camper vans based on Volkswagen's T-series of vans sold overseas debuted Tuesday.

Specifically, it is based on VW's latest passenger-oriented Multivan model (the T-series also includes a cargo model, the Transporter), making plug-in hybrid power a camper option for the first time.

The new California will begin deliveries later this year, but the U.S. is not included in the market list. Some of its features will likely be included in the similar ID.California, which is based on the ID.Buzz for the US, but the ID.California has been delayed due to low demand for electric campers, according to VW.

The new California debuts with a redesigned pop-up roof that can accommodate a bed, a feature of VW's California camper van. It features aluminum construction, a front window and large front opening, plus two side windows on the bellows, all with mosquito nets.

The California is based on a longer version of the Multivan, so its overall length is a generous 203.6 inches. Sliding doors on both sides of the van are also standard for the first time, providing easy access to the cabin no matter where it is parked. Awnings can be added on either side for sun or rain protection.

In addition, the rear seats have been converted from bench seats to independent seats. The front seats can be rotated 180 degrees to create a lounge-like space. There is also a grade with only two rear seats to create a more luxurious space.

Some grades are also equipped with a removable tablet screen that allows remote control of many of the van's functions. Another useful feature is the ability to turn off all the lights with a short double-tap of the light switch.

Numerous options can be added, including a kitchen with a refrigerator. There is no indoor shower, but an outdoor shower can be connected to a fresh water tank.

There are three powertrain options, all of which are paired with automatic transmissions. There is a gas and diesel 2.0-liter turbo four and a plug-in hybrid that combines a 1.5-liter turbo four with an electric motor. The plug-in hybrid is the most powerful option with 242 hp and includes all-wheel drive. Maximum towing capacity is 4,400 lbs.

The California has traditionally been based solely on VW's T-series of midsize vans dating back to the first microbus, but VW has also recently introduced California versions of its smaller Caddy van and larger Crafter van, the latter being called the Grand California The ID.Buzz is the spiritual successor to the original Microbus.
