Book Bugatti Type 55 Super Sport Latest Sur Mech Sur Chiron via mail order]

Jean Bugatti is a designer who showed off his talent in several cars launched by the company of his father, Ettore Bugatti, and the latest customized chiron in Bugatti's Sur Mesure Personalization division honors one of them.

This Chiron, called 55 1of1, wears the distinctive black and yellow coloring of Jean Bugatti's personal Type 55 Supersport. The original car was the first Bugatti to wear the supersport title, and it was also a Type 51 2.3ri derived from the engine that powered the race car, which propelled the Type 55 Supersport to a top speed of 111mph — which was pretty good when this car was launched in the early 1930s. It was impressive.

The 38 Type 55 Supersport was built and did not look like Jean Bugatti's personal car. Its two-tone coloring was translated into a modern chiron in the form of a black centerline and rear bodywork, with a yellow hood, front fascia and door.

Other custom elements include a hand-drawn "55" pattern that starts with the headlights and fades into the front fender, a black wheel with a yellow center cap, and a "55 1of1" script on the underside of the rear wing.

The two-tone theme continues inside. The black leather upholstery contrasts with the yellow embroidered accents on the door panels and headrests featuring a version of the fading 55 pattern from the exterior

Like the previous Sur Mesure Chiron honoring the Type 50S, which is Bugatti's first factory entry at Le Mans, the latest car is based on the Chiron Super Sport grade. It's a good idea. That means the 8.0-litre W-16 with quad turbocharged produces enough for 1,578 horsepower, or 0-60mph, with a top speed capped at 273mph.

The Chiron Super Sport was sold out, but the price at launch was 320 million euros (about3350 million). Bugatti did not say how much custom work on the Sur Mesure car would add to the price, but the company says it was commissioned by a buyer in Dubai.

Jean Bugatti's Type 55 supersport exists today at the National Museum of Automotive Art in Mulhouse, France. The museum's collection includes more than 100 cars, including more than 600 Bugatti cars. Many were part of the collection of businessmen Fritz Schramp, who hoarded Bugatti from the late 1920s to the early 1970s.
