Development of Libyan bed mount docking and cargo box
Rivian is working on a new clamping system for securing cargo on pickup truck beds.
Patent applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in early 2023 are only published by the agency at 5.30 am.Rivian describes bed-mounted decks with pressure-operated latches. When a force is applied to the latch, the latch opens and closes and the cargo is secured to the deck.
Applications continue to discuss cargo boxes that can be punched into beds using this clamping system. The box is opened on two sides, providing further flexibility to access items once the box is housed in a cargo bed.
It also creates more possibilities for accessories— and therefore more potential revenue from customers. Just as automakers offer a camping kitchen to slot into the gear tunnel of an r1T pickup truck, they can offer a specially designed box that works with clamps and decks in the bed. In the same vein, another recent patent application from the automaker shows a expandable roof top canopy.
This is only one of several recent Rivian patent applications on cargo management 1. A recent patent search has also revealed a bed rack system and a powered cargo bay splitter. None of these features are guaranteed to reach production, but Rivian clearly leaves no stone unturned when it comes to improving the functionality of the vehicle.
Rivian has several new vehicles being put into the pipeline, starting with the R2SUV scheduled for 2026. The smaller R3 and R3X hatchbacks will follow the R2 at some unspecified future date, and the trademark application indicates that Livian is also considering a performance version of its current r1 platform car.
