2025 Mini Cooper 4-door debuts with gas engine

The fourth generation of the modern Mini lineup continues to grow, revealed Wednesday, with the new Cooper 4-door hatchback scheduled to arrive in the United States later this year.

The newest Cooper, a two-door hatch Mini, will be available with a choice of gas or electric power, depending on the market, but the Cooper 4-door was revealed only with a gas powertrain.

The electric version of the Cooper is based on a newly developed EV-only platform, while the gas version is essentially a major update to the current generation. In the case of the Cooper 4-door, however, the mechanicals are the same as the previous generation, but Mini claims to have increased the overall width. This allows for more comfortable rear seating for three, while providing up to 32.6 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded flat.

Worldwide, the Cooper four-door will be sold in the Cooper C with a 156-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged inline three-cylinder and the Cooper S with a 204-hp 2.0-liter turbo four. According to Mini, the Cooper C has a 0-62 mph time of 8.0 seconds and a top speed of 134 mph, while the Cooper S has a 0-62 mph time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph.

The Cooper S 4-door and Cooper 4-door models will be available in the U.S., both powered by a 2.0-liter turbo 4. The Cooper S will have a 201 hp version of the engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Cooper C will be introduced in the U.S. next year, with detailed specifications to be announced closer to launch.

Like the two-door Cooper, the Cooper 4-door features an interface with an OLED display and the Mini Operating System9 that responds to the prompt "Hey, Mini," like the voice recognition system of parent company BMW's luxury models, with natural It incorporates natural language voice recognition that responds to prompts such as "Hey, Mini," like the voice recognition system in parent company BMW's luxury models. Digital key functions are also available.

Production of the Cooper S four-door model for the U.S. will begin in July, with the first vehicles arriving at dealerships in September. Prices start at $34,195 with a $995 destination charge. Production of the base Cooper 4-door for the U.S. market will begin in November and will arrive at dealerships in January 2025. Pricing for this model will be announced closer to launch. Both models will be 2025 models.

A high-performance version of the two-door Cooper, the John Cooper Works, with gas and electric powertrains, is still under development. In addition to the new Cooper hatch model, the new Mini Countryman crossover will also appear in the 2025 model year, with both gas and electric versions introduced in the United States. In April, Mini also unveiled a second crossover, called the Aceman, which is a size smaller than the Countryman. The Aceman is an EV-only model, and its sales in the U.S. have not yet been finalized.
