Hardcore versions of the Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V, confirming the Black Wing name and manual transmission.

Cadillac announced Tuesday that it will be assigning its most "hardcore" models a "Blackwing" designation in the future.

The designation will be used on models in Cadillac's "V" sub-brand and will initially appear on the upgraded, scheme-tuned CT4-V and CT5-V, which are scheduled to go into production later this year, the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V. Blackwing prototypes have already been spotted. [The CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing will be the true successors to the ATS-V and CTS-V, something Cadillac hinted at back in May last year when it unveiled the slightly more docile CT4-V and CT5-V. It's confirmed that both "fire-breathing" sport sedans will be equipped with manual transmissions, while a 10-speed automatic will be offered for buyers who don't like the #GiveAShift.

The Blackwing name first appeared on the 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 engine exclusive to Cadillac. However, this engine is not expected to be used in the hardcore CT4-V and CT5-V. [Instead, the CT4-V Blackwing will be powered by a new turbocharged V6 engine, while the CT5-V Blackwing will be powered by the familiar 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V8 engine from the old CTS-V, which developed 640 hp. It is expected to be fitted with.

The car is also expected to be equipped with General Motors' Global B electric architecture, which will support radio updates and high-performance computer processing, but could cause headaches for the aftermarket.

The only additional information Cadillac is willing to provide at this time is that both Blackwing models will feature a circuit-tuned chassis that will utilize new vehicle control technologies. Cadillac also stated that prototypes tested at Virginia International Raceway showed better lap times than the ATS-V and CTS-V.

Stay tuned.
