1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STI sold for a six-figure sum at a Bring A Trailer auction

Subaru's from the 90's are selling for six figures at Bring A Trailer.

And it's not just six figures. The final price paid for this car was a staggering $312,555.

Motorsports enthusiasts will immediately recognize this car and the reason for its high price.

This car is a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STI, one of only 424 built. Initially, 400 were produced for the Japanese market, but Subaru later decided to produce an additional 24 for the export market. Therefore, the license plate of this 22B STI shows a total of 400 units.

What makes the 22B STI so special In the 1990s, Subaru became a manufacturer to watch in the rally world, partly due to the success of star driver Colin McRae. This success led to the launch of the first Impreza WRX (World Rally Experimental) in 1992, followed two years later by the first Impreza WRX STI. [And in 1998, the most emblematic model, the Impreza 22B STI, was introduced. This model commemorated the Subaru World Rally Team's World Rally Championship hat trick from 1995 to 1997 and the 40th anniversary of Subaru's founding. 2.2-liter engine and a wide body common to rally cars were used. It was also offered only in a coupe body at the time.

The unit sold here had approximately 40,000 km (24,850 miles) on the odometer. The car included all service records from Japan, all import documents, and a clean Montana title. The car was brought into the U.S. under show-and-display rules.

Another 22B STI was just offered for sale in the UK last July. The car had only 271 miles on it. The asking price was 295,000 British pounds (about $372,480), and someone must have paid that or close to it.
