2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid unveiled for the first time

Subaru has long offered hybrid versions of the Forester in other markets, but an electrified version of the popular compact crossover has finally arrived in the United States, where a prototype was spotted for the first time.

It is based on the current sixth-generation Forester, which debuted last year as a 2025 model. The new Forester Hybrid will go on sale next year as a 2025 model.

Other than confirming plans for a Forester Hybrid at last year's regular Forester launch, Subaru has said little.

Under the hood, however, is expected to be a new hybrid powertrain developed in partnership with Toyota. Mazda is also participating in this partnership, which was announced earlier this year.

The new powertrain, which Subaru calls “Strong Hybrid,” has already debuted in Japan with the Crosstrek Hybrid, which combines a hybrid-optimized version of Subaru's signature 2.5-liter flat-4 engine with an electric motor and battery developed by Toyota combined with a Toyota-developed electric motor and battery.

Compared to Subaru's previous hybrid powertrains, the electric motor in the Strong Hybrid provides more power to allow the vehicle to run on electricity longer, leaving the gas engine to operate more of the time in its most efficient band and at some points may even function purely as a generator. Drive is provided to all four wheels via a mechanical four-wheel drive system.

In the Crosstrek Hybrid launched in Japan, the 2.5-liter flat four delivers 158 hp on its own and the electric motor delivers 88 hp. The battery has a capacity of 1.1 kwh, and although Subaru has not disclosed details, the new Crosstrek Hybrid is said to reduce gasoline consumption by about 20% over its predecessor, while at the same time shaving 2 seconds off the 0-60 mph time.

The Forester Hybrid is not the only new addition to the Forester lineup. A more rugged Forester Wilderness model will join the lineup soon. Like the previous Forester Wilderness, the new Forester Wilderness should have additional ground clearance and off-road tires.
