Verstappen is ahead of Leclerc.

Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen held off Ferrari to win the inaugural Formula One Miami Grand Prix, the fifth race of the 2022 season, at the newly built Miami International Autodrome surrounding Hard Rock Stadium.

Verstappen held off a late attack by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to win the race, with Leclerc crossing the finish line about 3.7 seconds behind. Carlos Sainz, also in a Ferrari, finished third, about 8 seconds behind the winner.

Leclerc started the race from pole position and was supported by Sainz, who also started on the front row, but the fast-moving Verstappen overtook Sainz on the outside of turn 1 on lap 1. Verstappen then chased down Leclerc and finally had a chance to overtake on lap 9 with a DRS boost.

Verstappen continued to control the race, but a crash between Pierre Gasly in the Alfatauri and McLaren's Lando Norris on lap 41 brought out the safety car. The race resumed on lap 47 and Verstappen was still in the lead, but struggled to build a gap to Leclerc. However, Leclerc was unable to capitalize and had to settle for second place.

Behind him, Sainz was struggling to hold off Red Bull's Sergio Perez. Perez tried to overtake on lap 52 and managed to get in front, but locked up and barely avoided contact with the Ferraris.

Perez took the checkered flag in fourth place, while Mercedes-Benz AMG's George Russell, with fresh tires, passed his teammate Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps to finish fifth. starting the race from 11th on the grid, Russell once again impressive performance, as he finished the race in fifth place, just ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished in eighth. [Haas' Kevin Magnussen retired after a collision with Aston Martin's Lance Stroll. Sebastian Vettel, also of Aston Martin, was forced to retire after contact with Haas' Mick Schumacher.

At the end of the weekend, Leclerc retains the lead in the 2022 drivers' championship with 104 points. Verstappen is second with 85 points and Perez is third with 66 points.
