Red Bull recovered from Ferrari's bad luck to finish 1-2
[Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen won the 2022 F1 Spanish Grand Prix after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc retired with a power unit problem. [Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz AMG's George Russell finished third, nearly 33 seconds behind the winner.

Starting the race from pole position, Leclerc was never threatened until lap 26 when he suffered a power unit failure. One of the reasons for Leclerc's good run in the early stages of the race was Verstappen's trouble. Verstappen's Red Bull got off to a good start in second place, but soon spun out, dropping him back to fourth, and a DRS problem meant that he spent most of the first half of the race behind Russell. Further back was Perez, followed by Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas.

Around lap 24, Verstappen's DRS began to work again and he was able to challenge Russell. the two drivers traded positions in a fierce battle, and while Russell was in front, Verstappen's DRS stopped working again. after Leclerc retired on lap 27, Verstappen made a pit stop and rejoined the race in fourth behind Bottas, and on lap 31, Perez, using DRS, passed Russell for the lead, and almost at the same time Verstappen passed Bottas for third.

Russell, who was on older tires, then pitted, handing second place to Verstappen. Perez then pitted, and Verstappen eventually took the lead. Verstappen made another pit stop on lap 44, handing the lead to Perez. However, Verstappen returned to the race in second place and gave way to Perez, who went on to complete a one-two finish.

Behind him were Russell in third and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who had dropped to 11th earlier in the race after a lap 7 spin. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton looked to be securing fourth place, but the seven-time world champion slowed due to a suspected leak in his power unit. Despite the slow pace, Hamilton was able to hold off Bottas for fifth place.

After the weekend, Verstappen moved into first place in the 2022 drivers' championship with a total of 110 points. Leclerc is second with 104 points and Perez is third with 85 points. In the constructors' championship, Red Bull leads with 195 points to Ferrari's 169 and Mercedes' 120.

The next race is this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.
