Perez pulls ahead and wins the 2022 Formula One Monaco Grand Prix.

Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez drove brilliantly in Sunday's 2022 Formula One Monaco Grand Prix to claim his third career win and first at the prestigious Monaco circuit.

Perez faced not only an all-Ferrari front row, but also heavy rain, the safety car, and a tire fadeout in a hard-fought victory; second place went to Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, just 1.15 seconds behind the winner, and third, about 1.5 seconds behind the same Red Bull Max Verstappen, also of Red Bull, finished about 1.5 seconds behind the winner.

Rain delayed the start by over an hour, and when the green light came out the drivers faced very wet conditions. Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari took pole position.

However, as the track began to dry out, Perez, who was in fourth place, was the first of the leaders to pit on lap 16, changing from wet to intermediate tires. Two laps later, Leclerc and Verstappen made the same change, with Perez catching up. Sainz, however, remained in the pits until lap 22, when he switched to slicks.

This allowed Perez to take the lead from Sainz in the Red Bull, with Verstappen also moving ahead of Leclerc into third place. on lap 27, Haas' Mick Schumacher suffered a major accident in the swimming pool, tearing his car in two, but fortunately he was unhurt. He was fortunately uninjured.

After the restart, Perez took control of the race, but his tires faded out around lap 55. This allowed Sainz, Verstappen, and Leclerc to close in on him, and Sainz almost passed him at the hairpin, but was stopped by Perez. After the top three finished, Leclerc took the checkered flag in fourth place, with Mercedes-Benz AMG's George Russell rounding out the top five.

At the end of the weekend, Verstappen extended his lead in the 2022 drivers' championship to 125 points. Leclerc is second with 116 points and Perez is third with 110 points. In the constructors' championship, Red Bull leads with 235 points to Ferrari's 199 and Mercedes' 134.
