Red Bull Racing, who finished second at the 2022 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen won the 2022 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix race on Sunday, ahead of teammate Sergio Perez. The final podium position went to Mercedes-Benz AMG's George Russell.

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari started the race from pole position. Leclerc got a poor start and locked up his brakes entering turn 1, allowing Perez to take the lead.

Behind him, Verstappen was close behind Leclerc and at the same time trying to hold off Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari. 9 laps in, Sainz stopped due to hydraulic problems. This brought out the virtual safety car and Ferrari decided to pit for Leclerc.

Unfortunately for Leclerc, a stuck front jack delayed his pit stop. He returned to the race in third place, 2.0 seconds behind Perez and 12.8 seconds behind Verstappen. Perez and Verstappen pitted on lap 16 and 18, respectively. This put Leclerc in the lead, but disaster struck Ferrari again on lap 20 when Leclerc retired with a power unit problem. This was the first time since the 2009 Australian GP that both Ferraris retired due to reliability issues.

On lap 33, Haas' Kevin Magnussen stopped his car on the side of the track with a problem with the Ferrari's power unit, bringing out the safety car again. Haas' Kevin Magnussen also had trouble with the power unit in his Ferrari and stopped his car at the side of the track. Hamilton started the race in 7th place, but passed Hiroki Tsunoda in the Alfa Tauri and Pierre Gasly, also in the Alfa Tauri, to move up to 4th place. Hamilton eventually crossed the finish line in fourth place, with Gasly rounding out the top five.

After eight races, Verstappen has a commanding lead in the 2022 drivers' championship. Verstappen has 150 points to Perez's 129 and Leclerc's 116. In the constructors' championship, Red Bull leads with 279 points to Ferrari's 199 and Mercedes' 161. The next round, the Canadian Grand Prix, will be held this weekend.
