Porsche adds second 718 production line

The Porsche 718 may not be new, but its popularity has not diminished.

To meet demand and prepare for the future, Porsche is expanding production of the 718 model line to the multi-brand Volkswagen Group plant in Osnabrück.

Osnabrück is the same plant responsible for the overflow production of the Cayenne. Preparation for 718 production in Osnabrück will take time and is expected to come off the line in mid-2023.

Porsche has stated that the expansion will not affect the number of employees currently working on 718 production at the current production site in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart.

The 718 shares a production line with the 911 sports car, and demand is increasing slightly with a record 38,464 cars delivered worldwide in 2021 (up 12%) In the first quarter of 2022, Porsche delivered 9,327 911s In 2021, Porsche will deliver 20, 502 718s were delivered, and a total of 4,536 718s were delivered in Q1 14, keeping production roughly on pace with last year.

The production change for the 718 will take place near the end of the current gas-powered vehicle's lifespan; the next generation of the 718 will be an electric vehicle, the automaker's third EV. The next generation 718, following the electric Macan, is expected to be available by 2025.

Expanded production would allow Porsche to continue producing the gas-powered 718 lineup at the same time the electric 718 goes into production. This scenario would follow Porsche's intended playbook for the Macan. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told Motor Authority in March that the electric 718 will be "the best all-electric car in the B segment."

Over the weekend, the electric Porsche GT4 ePerformance took the hill at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The demonstration was part of the GT4 ePerformance world tour, highlighting the concept's potential in racing and motorsports. since the GT4 ePerformance concept is just a bodyshell for the 718, it is unclear to what extent the upcoming 718 electric car It is unclear to what extent it is related to the upcoming 718 electric car.
