Volvo Teases New Electric Crossover Scheduled for 2023 Launch

Volvo gave the first glimpse of its new electric crossover due in 2023.

At Wednesday's presentation of the new 2024 EX90 mid-size electric SUV, Volvo briefly showed a shadow image of a much smaller product with styling cues similar to the EX90. This image appears at the 105:40 mark of the video below and depicts the new crossover sitting to the left of the EX90.

This mystery model is believed to be a subcompact electric crossover that sits below the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge compact electric crossovers, possibly labeled EX30, a name that Volvo has trademarked.

Stephen Connor, head of Volvo's Australian division, told a local publication earlier this year that Volvo's next EVs will include a crossover and a sedan, to be launched in succession after the EX90. The crossover was described as smaller than the XC40.

The crossover is expected to be based on the SEA modular EV platform from Volvo's parent company, Geely Automobile. The platform debuted last year in the 001 hot hatch from the same Geely brand, Zeekr, and features an 800-volt electric system for fast charging.

Production will likely take place in China to keep costs down. Geely Automobile has a state-of-the-art plant in Ningbo, on China's coast, that produces sea-based vehicles.
