2024 Buick Electra EV Spy Shot

Buick is developing an electric vehicle based on GM's Ultium platform and battery technology set, and the first prototype has been spotted.

The prototype is for a smaller crossover similar in size to the compact 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, also an Ultium-based model.

There is nothing of note about the design, except for the headlights, which resemble the design used on Buick's Electra-X concept unveiled earlier this year. At the rear, the taillight cluster features three vertical elements that mimic Buick's Tri-Shield logo.

According to the automaker, the Electra-X Concept Concept introduces a design language characterized by clean, futuristic lines and a light and airy interior. The prototype may also be a model for China, as Buick had specifically teased an EV for China, Buick's largest market. It is also possible that the EV will replace the compact Buick Envision.

Buick has confirmed that two Ultium-based EVs will be in U.S. showrooms by the end of 2023, one with conventional proportions and the other with more coupe-like proportions.

Buick has also decided to use the Electra name for at least one U.S.-bound EV and may use it for more models. Buick recently registered the trademarks "Electra E1" through "Electra E9" in the U.S., implying a full family of Electra EVs.

The Electra name was a fixture in the Buick lineup for decades, first appearing in the 1959 model year and continuing through 1990.

The prototype shown here should be unveiled as a production model next year. When it is released in the U.S., it should appear as a model in 2024.
