2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Spy Shots & Video

The original Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been around for 40 years and has undergone numerous updates to keep it fresh, and after a redesign for the 2019 model year, it looks like the automaker will at least give the current version regular updates in the same manner as its predecessor.

We have already spotted a prototype of the updated version of the standard G-Class, and now we have spy shots of a prototype of AMG's updated G 63. Both prototypes are also featured in the video below; both versions of the G-Class are slated to debut early next year as 2023 models.

Judging from the camouflage gear of the G 63 prototypes, these vehicles get a modified fascia with what appears to be active shutters introduced at the front. The general shape of the grille should remain unchanged, but a change in pattern is expected.

The dash will be covered up, suggesting that some changes will be made to the interior as well. The main update inside will be the addition of the latest version of Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system. [The G 63 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque; AMG has just announced a plug-in hybrid powertrain using this V-8 in the form of the GT 63 S E Performance 4-door coupe and S 63 E Performance Just recently, we do not yet expect the G 63 to go the plug-in hybrid route.

More likely is the addition of a mild hybrid system, which is already available on the 4.0-liter V-8 engine in some Mercedes models. This system features an electric motor that can temporarily boost power to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft. The electric powertrain will also be available in the G-Class, but it will not appear until 2024.

A repeat of the 4x4 squared option with portal axle was also added to the G 63 lineup overseas earlier this year, but the US availability of this option has yet to be announced.

Updates will be announced as development progresses.
