Porsche to Wrap 911 Dakar in Historic Rally Style

Porsche is offering buyers of the 2023 911 Dakar one of the few livery inspired by the designs used on Porsche rally cars that competed in events such as the East African Safari Rally and the Dakar Rally in the 1970s and 1980s, giving them the offers an opportunity to dress up a rugged sports car.

One of these is the Rally Design Package, which features the popular Rothmans livery worn by the 911-based 953 rally cars that competed in the Dakar Rally in the 1980s. The Losmans livery was applied to the 911 Dakar, which made its world premiere at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show last November. It adds $28,470 to the Dakar's base price of $223,450. Part of this high cost is due to the elaborate painting process required to apply this livery.

However, Porsche unveiled three other livery available as wraps on Tuesday. These three livery replicate the look of Porsche's entries in the East African Safari Rally in 1971, 1974, and 1978.

The Rally 1971 wrapping mimics the look of the 911 S, which finished fifth in the 1971 rally, thanks to the efforts of Sobieczław Zasada and Marian Bien. Featuring a simple black circle including racing number 19 and a black hood, the wrap is priced at 4,165 euros (about $4,470).

The Rallye 1974 wrap features a design inspired by the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS entered in the 1974 rally, with Swedish rally champion Bjorn Waldegård at the wheel with co-driver Hans Torzelius They led for most of the race, but broke a wishbone late in the event and finished second overall. Their machine-inspired wrap features the racing number 19 and blue and black stripes. It is priced at 4,165 euros.

The last Rallye 1978 wrap features a design inspired by another car Waldegård raced in the East African Safari Rally, this time a 911 SC Group 4 rally car built for the 1978 event. He again suffered damage to his car and finished the event in fourth place. His car was decorated in the famous colors of his sponsor Martini, but again, the Martini name was not used on the wrap. Adding this wrap costs 5,950 euros ($6,385).

The wraps are available through the personalization department of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur; wraps for the Rallye 1971 and Rallye 1974 can also be ordered after the sale through Porsche Equipment at Porsche Centers through Porsche Equipment at Porsche Centers after the sale.
