Volvo's EX30 subcompact electric crossover, debuting in mid-June.

Volvo is working on an electric crossover that will sit below the C40 and XC40 Recharge compact duo.

The new vehicle was teased when the 2024 EX90 mid-size electric SUV was unveiled last November, and Volvo CEO Jim Rowan tentatively confirmed last month that it would be called the EX30.

Rowan has since clarified that the debut will take place in June. He made the latest comments in an interview with Wheels published Monday.

"We release the next little SUV," he said." We previewed it for you guys back in November, so I think we will release the small SUV on June 15, so sometime in mid-June of this year, we will release it."

Production will take place in China and sales will begin by the end of 2023. Volvo has not said whether the EX30 will be sold in the United States.

The car is intended to attract younger buyers and could become the brand's top seller. Volvo sold 615,121 units in 2022 and hopes to grow that to about 1.2 million units by 2025.

Given its size and positioning, the EX30 will likely be the most affordable car in Volvo's lineup. This should help Volvo's goal of attracting younger buyers and should also help Volvo's plan to offer the EX30 under its "Care by Volvo" subscription plan. In an interview with Wheels, Rowan said that subscriptions would be available for a minimum of three months, at least in Europe

and that the EX30 would be available for a minimum of three months in the United States.

Volvo briefly released a shadow image of the EX30 during the EX90 reveal. This teaser refers to a vehicle with similar styling to the EX90, but on a smaller scale.

The EX30 is expected to be based on the SEA modular EV platform from Volvo's parent company, Geely Automobile. The platform will debut in 2021 with the 001 hot hatch from Zeekr, also a Geely brand, and features an 800-volt electrical system for fast charging.
