Spy shot of 2024 Aston Martin DB12

Aston Martin was spotted testing an updated version of the DB11 Grand Tourer.

The DB11 was originally introduced for the 2017 model year, and the changes made to the updated version may be significant enough to deserve a new name. The current idea is DB12, whose trademark was recently updated by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The updated vehicle carries over most of the styling of the current version, but has a new front end with a larger grille and improved headlights. Also, the hood and front fenders are now separate, in contrast to the current, and costly, design where the front hood and fenders are combined as one huge piece of rolled aluminum. It is unclear if there will be any changes to the rear.

Perhaps more important to this update are the changes inside the car. A completely redesigned dashboard with a more advanced infotainment system is expected. The current design relies on outdated technology borrowed from Mercedes-Benz.

The updated model will also use borrowed technology, especially with regard to driver assistance features. The front of the prototype is equipped with new sensors.

It is not clear what is planned for the powertrain, but current options should carry over, possibly with increased power. These options include a twin-turbocharged 527-hp Mercedes 4.0-liter V-8 and a twin-turbocharged 630-hp Aston 5.2-liter V-12. The V-12 engine's power is expected to be boosted now that the DBS is out of production; the DBS closed earlier this year with the 759-hp DBS 770 Ultimate Edition.

Whatever the final name will be, the updated car will debut later this year as part of Aston Martin's 110th anniversary celebration, and should appear as a 2024 model.

Aston Martin's Vantage sports car will also receive an update later this year. After that, Aston Martin will unveil a plug-in hybrid hypercar, the Valhalla, in 2024, and possibly a mid-engine supercar, the Vanquish, in 2025. After that, Aston Martin plans to unveil its first EV, which will be a sports car. An electric SUV is also planned.
