VW Reveals More Powerful Electric Motor for MEB Platform

The Volkswagen Group on Thursday unveiled its next-generation electric drive module designed for the MEB platform that underpins its flagship EVs.

Codenamed APP550, the drive module includes a motor, inverter, and transmission and is designed for the rear axle of the MEB platform.

It is expected to be rolled out in the fourth quarter starting with Volkswagen's ID family of EVs vehicles, possibly the new ID.7 sedan, which is scheduled to make its world debut on April 17 and hit showrooms in 2024.

According to VW, the module will offer more power and torque than the current units used in most ID EVs. The initial version will deliver 281 hp and up to 405 lb-ft of torque, depending on the vehicle's gear ratio. Current ID EVs typically have a 201 hp rear motor.

To improve performance, the motor's stator has a higher number of effective turns and a larger wire cross section. In addition, the rotors use powerful permanent magnets with higher load capacities. Another important factor is the ability of the inverter to provide the high phase current required for high output.

The control software of the inverter (mainly the clock frequency and the modulation scheme for generating the current) was also fine-tuned to improve efficiency, according to the VW Group. The various thermal management systems in the drive module have also been improved, resulting in increased efficiency; VW says the drive module will contribute to an extended range.

The VW Group is also working on an updated version of its MEB platform, dubbed MEB+, which will support a common battery cell design and provide more range and higher charge rates.
