2020 Acura MDX PMC Edition is a bargain but limited to just 330 units

Acura's Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, was originally established to build the second-generation NSX supercar. Last year, however, Acura began applying the same tender love and care that the NSX receives to its regular models, albeit in a limited run of a few hundred cars called the PMC Edition.

The first model was the TLX PMC Edition, of which only 360 were built. And now there is the MDX PMC Edition, which is even rarer with only 330 units.

The MDX PMC Edition goes on sale Saturday with prices starting at $63,745 including a $1,995 destination charge. This is only $4,470 more than a standard MDX built to the same specifications, but without that delicious red paint.

A key feature of Acura's PMC edition is the exclusive Valencia Red Pearl paint finish, usually a $6,000 option on the NSX. This is the highest quality finish Acura offers and includes not one, but three clear coats, adding incredible depth. Other gloss black accents are applied throughout the body, including the standard 20-inch wheels.

After the paint is applied, PMC Edition receives all the parts by workers trained to build the NSX. Some of the tolerances here are only 0.5 mm, or half the thickness of a one yen coin.

The MDX PMC Edition is based on a non-hybrid version of the mid-size SUV, powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers 290 horsepower and 267 pounds of torque. A nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system are also part of the package.

The interior is trimmed in black with a mix of leather and Alcantara. This is complemented by red stitching and metal-finish paddle shifters. Each car also comes with a numbered plate unique to the PMC edition, along with top-of-the-line options such as the Advance Package, A-Spec Package, LED headlights, and adaptive suspension dampers.

After the introduction of the redesigned RDX in 2019, Acura will take a bit of a breather with the 2020 model year before introducing the redesigned TLX in 2021. With the introduction of the new TLX, Acura will bring back the Type S badge on its new V-6 twin-turbocharged performance range-topper.
